Walgreens announced plans to close 1200 stores last October, with 500 of those stores closing during 2025. As reported by WGNTV, there are 57 stores throughout 17 states that are already slated to be closed by June.
The closures include stores in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia. See the list of closures here.
The decision comes in response to several factors, including rising costs, difficulty in getting prescription reimbursements, and increased competition from online retailers. These closures are expected to affect both urban and suburban areas, with Walgreens focusing on consolidating resources to strengthen profitability.
