How to Save on Black Friday Like It’s Your Job (Without Making It One)
Anybody can find a sale on Black Friday. The real magic? Knowing which bundle is the better buy, which rewards can cover another gift, and which “amazing deal” deserves to stay right there on the shelf.
Y’all know we love a good price drop, but some of the best holiday savings take a little strategy. These are the tricks worth keeping in your back pocket before you start checking names off your list.
1. Let Amazon Auto Buy hunt down retail price
That hot toy is on the wish list, but the price has suddenly doubled? Do NOT let holiday hype talk you into paying a ridiculous markup.
For eligible items, Amazon’s Auto Buy feature lets you set your maximum purchase price and authorize Amazon to order automatically when that price is available. Set your target at the item’s regular retail price—or lower—and let Amazon watch for you. You can ask Amazon’s shopping assistant to buy the item when it reaches your chosen price.
Check your selected item, delivery address and payment method before confirming. And if you find the gift elsewhere, cancel your request in the AutoBuy hub so you don’t accidentally buy it twice.
2. Give Sam’s Club and Costco a spot on your toy-shopping route
Warehouse clubs deserve a look before you buy the same toy somewhere else. Their toy bundles can include extra figures, accessories or multiple items that make the package a better value.
Compare what’s inside, not just the name on the box. A slightly higher price might buy a much more complete gift.
And if a multipack contains separately packaged, age-appropriate toys? Consider splitting it among siblings, cousins or your donation list. The giant box doesn’t have to mean one giant present.
Did you see Sam’s Club and Walmart Plus just bundled their memberships?! It is an insane deal for two of our fave shopping memberships, and if you have both memberships already, link them – you might get a hefty refund! Costco has their best membership deal of the year happening now too!
3. Play the advent calendar waiting game—or grab your favorite now
Advent calendars have a December 1 deadline, which makes shopping for them a little different from the rest of your holiday list.
ALDI’s 2026 advent calendar collection arrives November 4, with affordable options including cheese and beauty calendars. Keep Costco’s calendars on your radar for early markdowns, too—prices and availability can vary by warehouse.
But here’s where waiting could pay off: last year, we saw select advent calendars reach up to 75% off on Amazon during the last week of November! If those deals repeat, procrastinators could score a seriously sweet holiday countdown.
It’s a gamble, though. Popular calendars might sell out before the markdowns arrive, and there’s the possibility it will arrive after December 1 (but who doesn’t mind opening a couple extra doors)?
Our strategy? Buy early if you have your heart set on one specific calendar. If you’re flexible, keep watching for those late-November deals. Browse our top advent calendars for kids to start your shortlist.
4. Keep checking Walmart’s holiday gift sets
Don’t mentally file holiday-themed gift sets under “things that go on clearance after Christmas.” Keep watching them throughout the season for price drops and bonus Walmart Cash offers! And you might get lucky and see both happening at the same time – we saw it several times last year!
Beauty sets, grooming kits, cocoa bundles and character-themed gifts are worth adding to your watchlist.
5. Split gift sets with a little common sense
A multipack of hand creams, individually boxed lip products or small candles can cover several stockings or gift baskets.
Do the per-gift math before checkout: a hypothetical $24 set with six usable gifts works out to $4 each. But a set with 3 full-size products and seven things nobody wants does not equal ten useful gifts.
6. Compare tool kits to BOGO offers
Home Depot and Lowe’s both offer bundled tool kit deals and BOGO Tool & Battery deals. No need to wait- deals are happening now!
Buying for someone who already owns compatible batteries? Tool-only is perfect. They’ll love the extra battery and love adding a new tool to their collection. Buying their first cordless tool? A complete starter kit may be the better gift and value.
7. Match prices in “buy two, get one” sales
This tiny cart adjustment can make a surprisingly big difference. When a promotion makes the cheapest eligible item free:
- Three $30 items = $30 saved.
- Two $30 items and one $10 item = $10 saved.
Same number of gifts. Very different savings.
Group similarly priced items together when the offer allows it, and check how the cart assigns the discount before ordering. Target’s BOGO promotions, for example, base the discount on the lowest-priced item.

8. Make Kohl’s Cash do double gift duty
When Kohl’s offers $15 Kohl’s Cash for every $50 spent during the first week of November and during Thanksgiving week, think beyond the first purchase. A qualifying $100 purchase earns $30 to put toward more gifts during the redemption period.
Here’s what makes this especially useful: many big brands excluded from regular percent-off coupons still qualify for earning and redeeming Kohl’s Cash. That can make Kohl’s competitive on something that rarely gets a coupon discount elsewhere. Sephora at Kohl’s merchandise and gift cards are excluded from earning Kohl’s Cash.
Buy the bigger gift, then give that Kohl’s Cash a job: pajamas, slippers, toys or another gift already on your list.
9. Check your Target Circle bonuses before building your cart.
You might have a personalized spending offer waiting in your account! These often drop on Thursdays and might be something like spend $100, get $15 Circle rewards. Don’t buy extra just to chase the bonus, but it is an amazing way to make a deal on something that doesn’t go on sale often!
Give every reward a purpose—and count it once
A $50 purchase that earns a $10 reward still costs $50 today. That reward has value when you actually use it. Don’t subtract the reward from your first purchase and call the next purchase free. Your budget deserves honest math, even during the season of shopping-cart excitement.
Keep a simple note with the reward amount, expiration date and intended purchase. This works for Kohl’s Cash, Drug store rewards, promotional gift cards and bonus cards.
10. Spoil the beauty lover without blowing your budget
Their favorite fragrance or skincare doesn’t have to come with a full-price receipt. Beauty shopping gets especially fun when a good sale comes with a bag of freebies!
- Watch Bath & Body Works on Sunday evenings. They’ve been dropping flash sales (usually 20% off sitewide) that can make it a great time to grab a gift set for less!
- Stack ULTA’s free gifts! Beauty Breaks are limited-time free gifts with qualifying purchases that often pop up on Wednesdays and occasionally other days. Before checking out, browse ULTA’s free gift with purchase section, too—qualifying gifts can stack with the Beauty Break! You could score their favorite fragrance, a Beauty Break bonus set and another fragrance gift, like a robe or throw blanket, when those offers overlap. Add any required gifts to your bag and confirm everything shows as FREE.
- Keep an eye on Victoria’s Secret and PINK flash sales. We’ve been seeing full-sized beauty drop as low as $10! Check the sizes and eligible scents—these can be a fun way to fill a beauty lover’s gift bag without spending prestige-fragrance prices.
- Shop Sephora’s Savings Event—and don’t overlook Sephora at Kohl’s! Rouge members get 20% off October 30–November 9; VIB members get 15% off and Insiders get 10% off November 3–9. All tiers can get 30% off Sephora Collection October 30–November 9.Here’s one of our favorite insider tips: Watch Sephora at Kohl’s during Kohl’s Early Black Friday sale in the first week of November. Year after year, we’ve seen some amazing beauty markdowns included in their Black Friday sale that stack with the Sephora Savings Event code, making already-discounted beauty an even better buy! We’ll be watching for those combinations again this year!
- Look for fragrance samplers with a redemption voucher. Sephora Favorites sets let the recipient try several scents, then redeem the included certificate for a full-sized bottle of their favorite featured fragrance. Compare the set’s price with the eligible bottle sizes—you could find a better buy than purchasing the perfume alone! Check the certificate’s redemption rules, since Sephora and Sephora at Kohl’s versions can differ.

11. Buy gifts with discounted gift cards
I think this is the most under-rated savings tip. Gift cards are not just for giving – they are for your own savings too!
Sam’s Club and Costco sell discounted cards for restaurants, entertainment, gaming and other brands. A hypothetical $100 gift card purchased for $80 saves $20 before the recipient even uses it. And Sam’s Club often runs sales on these already discounted cards too!
Kroger often offers 4x Reward Points on gift card purchases with digital coupon so that $100 gift card could earn you 400 points (40¢ off per gallon of gas, up to 30 gallons).
Before buying, check where the card works, whether it arrives digitally or physically, and whether the retailer allows it with the promotion you want.
12. A gift for them, a little bonus for you
Holiday gift card promotions are the shopping version of “one for you, one for me”—and we fully support it.
Stores and restaurants often offer a bonus card when you purchase a qualifying amount in gift cards. Think buy a $50 gift card, get a $10 bonus card. Give the purchased card to someone on your list, then save the bonus for your own lunch, shopping trip or January pick-me-up.
Just check the bonus-card rules. These often work more like coupons, with expiration dates, minimum purchases or specific redemption windows. You may need to wait until January to use yours.
We have a huge list of gift card deals and bonus offers to get you started.
13. Check your rewards stash before spending more cash
Before you pull out your wallet, check what’s hiding in your rewards accounts. Fetch points, an Ibotta balance, unused gift cards—that forgotten stash could help cover gifts, stocking stuffers or even holiday groceries.
We don’t recommend treating cash-back apps like a savings account (Side-eyeing you, Checkout 51). But if you’ve already accumulated rewards, this is a great time to redeem them. Check your available cash-out options, minimums and processing times so you’re ready when a deal drops.
Give your credit card rewards a look, too—and consider checking weekly during the holiday season. Some programs offer limited-time discounts on select gift card redemptions, letting you get the same gift card for fewer points.
Compare the value before redeeming, though. If your points could get you $25 cash back but only a $20 gift card, take the cash! A gift card is useful only if it’s for somewhere you actually plan to spend.
14. Your payment card might have another deal hiding in its app.
Make sure to check those bank cards for merchant offers that award a statement credit or bonus points on qualifying purchases. Add the offer before shopping, then pay with the enrolled card.
Pair an eligible card offer with a sale price, coupon and store rewards, and you’re getting into next-level pro savings—this is taking stacking to an art! Read the minimum-spend requirements and exclusions, especially if you’re planning to pay partly with gift cards.

14. Keep watching prices after you buy
The deal hunt doesn’t always end at checkout.
Save receipts and check the store’s current price-adjustment policy. Costco.com, for example, allows qualifying requests within 30 days; dated promotions also require the request during the active promotional period. It does not match warehouse prices for online purchases.
Set a reminder for your bigger purchases. Checking for a refund is a lot more fun than discovering you missed the deadline yesterday.
15. Let your gift list tell you when you’re done
Before the sales get loud, write down the person, gift idea and price you’d be happy paying. Include useful details like clothing sizes, preferred colors and existing tool or gaming systems. Then follow our Black Friday & Cyber Monday deals for offers that fit.
The goal is to finish your list with money left over. Find the right gift at a great price, check that name off, and enjoy the extremely festive activity of closing the shopping tab.
