A New York lawmaker has introduced a proposal that would require retailers and grocery stores to give shoppers a 10% discount when using self-checkout.
The bill was introduced late in the legislative session and remains in committee, meaning it has not become law.
The proposal comes as several states continue to debate self-checkout rules. Other lawmakers around the country have suggested limiting self-checkout lanes, restricting the number of items shoppers can scan, or increasing employee oversight to help reduce theft.
If passed, New York would be among the first states to require retailers to offer customers a discount for using self-checkout.
