Scarfing sandwiches and pinching pennies
For a long time, Subway has been synonymous with value and taste. For years, Subway was famous for its $5 Footlong deal, but since that’s gone, it can be tough to know which sandwich is the best for your wallet. Which are the best value? How can you get the most out of Subway deals?
This post will explain which Subway items are the best deals, why the $5 Footlong disappeared, and how you can save extra money at Subway restaurants.
Best value items at Subway
The best way to save money at Subway is to use coupons and reward points. Here at The Freebie Guy, we’ve compiled a list of the best Subway coupons and deals to get you started. We update this list often, so check for new deals!
If you’re not using reward points or coupons, you’ll get the most value by ordering a footlong sandwich. Although the 6” subs cost less, you get double the sandwich for a few dollars more. A side of potato chips is an extra $1.49. Throw in a cup of water, and you have a filling meal.
What happened to the Subway $5 Footlong?
Remember the jingle? “Five dollar footloooong!” It was ingrained in our heads for years, reminding us we could get a footlong sandwich at our local Subway for a measly five bucks. But it didn’t last forever.
What happened to the Subway $5 Footlong?
The simple answer is that Subway took it away due to rising food costs and low margins. Thanks to the 2008 recession and inflating food costs, the $5 Footlong deal just wasn’t making Subway enough money over time. They realized they needed to raise the price of the footlong to keep up with food costs and maintain margins. Thus, the $5 Footlong deal was sent to its grave.
What sandwiches are $5 at Subway?
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a $5 sandwich at Subway nowadays. Even most 6” subs are now in the $6 to $8 range.
However, we found some 6” subs that hover in the $5 range.
- Veggie Delite – $4.99
- Black Forest Ham – $5.29
- Cold Cut Combo – $5.19
- Meatball Marinara – $5.49
These sandwich prices should stay the same as long as you don’t pay for any add-ons (like bacon or smashed avocado) or order for delivery. Remember that you’ll always save money by ordering in-store or for pickup. Additionally, remember that these prices vary based on franchise location.

Which Subway side is the best deal?
Subway sides are pretty inexpensive as sides go. If you were to visit a fast food restaurant like Burger King or Chick-fil-A, a side may cost you anywhere from $3 to $4. Subway’s sides are limited, but they’re significantly cheaper.
At this time, Subway only offers three types of sides at their restaurants: a footlong Auntie Anne’s pretzel, a bag of chips, or a pouch of applesauce. The Auntie Anne’s pretzel is only $3—less than what you’d pay for a basic pretzel at an Auntie Anne’s location. A bag of chips is just $1.49. And the pouch of applesauce—intended for kids—is only $1.59.
The pretzel will be the most filling and offer the best bang for your buck. The applesauce is arguably the healthiest option. But a bag of chips for just $1.49 is also a terrific deal for a side you won’t find at most restaurants.
Please remember that these prices vary based on location.
Getting extra value with reward points
Many restaurants will reward you for visiting frequently, and Subway is no different. With the Subway MVP Rewards program, you earn 10 points for every $1 spent. Once you reach 400 points, that’s converted into $2 of Subway Cash that you can use on any order. So, for every $40 you spend at Subway, you get a $2 coupon.
The best way to keep track of Subway MVP Rewards points is to download the Subway app and order through it.
